Workshop Description
This 3-hour interactive workshop provides a comprehensive overview of liver anatomy and physiology for medical interpreters, with an emphasis on common liver diseases and the liver transplant process. Participants will learn the liver’s role in the body, from its basic anatomy and functions (e.g., metabolism, detoxification, and bile production), to understanding key clinical terms like ALT, AST, and bilirubin. The program will review a range of liver pathologies (viral hepatitis, alcohol-related liver disease, autoimmune and genetic conditions) with focused discussion on Metabolic-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD) (formerly NAFLD), and cirrhosis. An in-depth section will demystify liver transplantation – including indications for transplant, the waiting list and MELD scoring system, surgical process, and post-transplant concepts like rejection and immunosuppression. Throughout the workshop, clear explanations and bilingual terminology research will help interpreters confidently bridge communication between providers and LEP patients in liver-related encounters.
Learning Objectives
During and at the conclusion of this session, participants will:
- Describe the basic anatomy of the liver and explain its key physiological functions in the human body.
- Define common liver function lab tests (e.g., ALT, AST, bilirubin) and identify what abnormal results indicate about liver health.
- Describe major liver diseases – including metabolic-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), cirrhosis, and hereditary hemochromatosis – and summarize their essential characteristics and terminology.
Explain the liver transplantation process, outlining the indications for a transplant, the main steps from evaluation to surgery, and key post-transplant concepts such as MELD score, organ rejection, and immunosuppression.
